Origin Of the Symbol & Name:
Mn,external image chfa_03_img0519.jpg Manganese comes from the Greek word "magnes" and was first found in Magnesia, modern day Greece. Though it was not proposed as an Element until 1774 in by Carl Wilhelm Scheele, then discovered by Johan Gottlieb Gahn later that year.
Location and Abundance:
Mn is found in the land and water at rates of .002mg/L in the water and 950mg/kg making up .14% of the Earth's crust.
In 1803 Manganese nodules containing 24% manganese (mixed with copper and nickel) were found on the ocean floor and these nodules are now collected to harvest their manganese.

  • Large amounts of manganese are considered toxic, but studys show manganese is important for absorbing vitamins and has other benifitial qualitys.
